Why do I think Conor McGregor has a chance of victory at UFC 229?
Only 2 more week to go until this exciting fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor. I was listening to an old podcast with Joe Rogan and John Danaher, discussing the possible outcome of the fight. John Danaher made an interesting point. He states that there are 3 distinct characteristics that allow a fighter to win in the octagon.
A fighter must control the set ups, the direction and the pace of fight to prevail as the victor. The sets ups, being the intricate exchange on the feet, being punches, kicks, elbows, knees, takedowns, feints, counters and positional traps. The direction of the fight is dictated by the ability of the fighter to steer the competition into either grappling, ground & pound, cage fighting or striking.
Lastly, the pace of fight which in my opinion is closely linked to direction of the fight is when a fighter forces his opponent to attack in area of weakness. As an example, make a world-class striker grapple or world-class grappler strike. Essentially that is what we have in the upcoming UFC bout.
Although each fighter are Mixed Martial Artists, Conor is a world-class striker and Khabib is a world class grappler. Khabib has the ability to set the direction and pace of the fight because of his strong wrestling, Judo and Sambo. Whereas Conor is a master of the set ups. He has an ability to lay traps, feint and find a home to the killer left hand. If Conor can keep the fight standing and find a home for his left hand touch of death, then he has a chance for victory.
However, if Khabib can nullify Conor’s left hand and bring him to ground and drain the life out of him though ground & pound then it a bad night for Conor. Only 2 weeks left it will be exciting to see what happens.
